ZACH: WHO ARE YOU?

CATEGORY: CENTRAL OREGON

When Zach got engaged to his bride to be, he threw a big party at his studio.  She was still in Southern California, but he had a celebratory party anyway.  I was told that “Everybody” was going.  An acquaintance, Wally, asked me if I wanted to go with him. He said it would be a good opportunity to show Zach that I had landed on my feet.  I said that I didn’t really want to go.

But about ten o’clock I decided I would go after all: by myself.  I thought Wally would still be there, but even if he weren’t, there would be so many people at the party, that who would know if I were alone or with somebody?  I donned one of Zach’s favorites dresses.  When I pulled up in front of his place, the double doors were standing wide open.  Usually his parties lasted most of the night, but I could tell this one was over.  I walked in.  The music was playing but no one was there–no one except the host.  He was sitting on a sofa alone.  He saw me.  He rose and walked over to me.  He stood there staring at me.  He said “Who ARE you”?  Then we started dancing.  We danced for well over an hour without either of us saying a word.

Then I said, “I have to go now.”  He followed me toward the door.  He said “Don’t go.”    “DON’T GO.”      “DON’T GO!”

I walked out the door.  I really had landed on my feet.
