FINISHING THE PORT TOWNSEND HOUSE

PARLOR OCTAGON

After finishing the kitchen, I replaced the original walls in the living part of the house so the entry hall, dining room (including the bay window where the terrible door had been) and parlor were restored.  It was not exactly the same as the original because the octagon had been added to the parlor.  I was lucky to find four 8’ high doors which made two double sliding doors similar to those that had been there originally. One set was between the parlor and the hallway and the other between the parlor and the dining room.

The one thing that didn’t get finished was the bell-shaped roof over the octagon, which would really have made it look like a tower and would have tied it to the rest of the house.  I left the plans for it with the people who bought the house but they did not want to build it. Who could blame them?
